What is Maternity Reflexology?

Maternity reflexology is a safe an effective therapy that can be enjoyed throughout pregnancy. During pregnancy, your body will go through significant changes; these changes will affect the emotional, hormonal and physiological balance of your body.

Reflexology can help alleviate or prevent discomfort arising from this imbalance and restore the body’s equilibrium. Maternity reflexology is adapted for the different stages of pregnancy and is particularly useful in supporting the endocrine system (hormonal).

During Pregnancy

A lot of women experience anxiety during pregnancy, brought on by various factors like concerns about the pregnancy, physical changes and not feeling yourself or sure of who you are becoming. Reflexology works directly on the nervous system, calming it and helping to put things into perspective.

Reflexology used regularly in the final few weeks of pregnancy will help with relaxation. When you are relaxed you produce less adrenaline. Adrenaline directly effects the production of Oxytocin which is required for labour. Remember, your body knows how to deliver your baby, you just have to trust the process!

Studies in the UK have found that women who received regular treatments from 32 weeks on experienced shorter labours … by approximately 4 hours!! They also required less pain relief and found their recovery after delivery was also considerably quicker. Babies who have experienced reflexology while in the womb were typically calmer, easier to settle and suffered less from colic.

Post-Natal Care

Many women are also turning to reflexology for their post-natal care. Reflexology can help alleviate postnatal problems and help with breastfeeding. It can also assist with:

E

Constipation

E

Urine retention

E

Backache

E

Stress and anxiety

E

Encourage milk production

E

Rebalancing hormones

E

Sleep issues

E

Postnatal depression/Baby blues

E

Encourage toning of the uterine muscles

Although reflexology is safe through pregnancy, in certain circumstances such as those who have experienced early labour, placenta previa, recent vaginal bleeding and severe high blood pressure, the client needs to consult with their doctor or midwife before booking a treatment. Reflexology is not a replacement or alternative treatment to medical and obstetric care. If you have any concerns, please consult with your medical provider.
